Adobe is continuing its AI offensive with the option to remove unwanted people from the background of images in Adobe Lightroom.in recent months, and now it’s the turn of Lightroom to benefit from the AI fairy dust. The photography suite gets two new AI features: the option to remove background objects and lens blur, which introduces bokeh where it previously didn’t exist.
The new Generative Remove feature lets you brush over much larger objects in the background, such as people photobombing a portrait, and have the area filled in by the AI tools. Adobe’s demonstrations showed this working on areas with complex backgrounds, such as distinct wallpaper patterns, but it’s best to reserve judgement on the effectiveness of such features until they’re being used in the real world.The Lens Blur feature is another new addition to Lightroom.
Adobe is far from the first company to introduce such tools, but the company claims the AI filters have been finely tuned to avoid common flaws, such as the blurring of the in-focus subject’s hair. Once again, only when the features are tested on actual photos can their effectiveness be evaluated. Lightroom users can also benefit from the additional generative AI features in Photoshop by right-clicking on images and choosing to edit them in Photoshop, assuming they have a subscription to the full-blown image editor.There’s a smattering of non-AI related features being added to Lightroom in this latest release, too.
