Actress Scarlett Johansson said that she was “forced to hire legal counsel” to demand the removal of an artificial intelligence voice for OpenAI’s chatbot that sounded too much like her.

In a statement, Altman said the Sky voice “is not Scarlett Johansson’s, and it was never intended to resemble hers.” Altman also said that the company cast the voice actor for the Sky voice before approaching Johansson. “We are sorry to Ms. Johansson that we didn’t communicate better,” he said. In a blog post Sunday, the company said that its voices were not intended to sound like any one person. “We believe that AI voices should not deliberately mimic a celebrity’s distinctive voice,” OpenAI wrote. “Sky’s voice is not an imitation of Scarlett Johansson but belongs to a different professional actress using her own natural speaking voice.
