Originally designed to accelerate computer image processing, graphics processing units are specialized circuits typically used primarily for gaming. With the boom in generative AI, though, GPUs have become foundational to high-performance computing, especially in neural networks and deep learning.

GPUs, on the other hand, have thousands of cores optimized for parallel processing, which gives them the ability to process vast amounts of data simultaneously. That makes them exceptionally well-suited for a particular kind of calculation called matrix multiplication that is used to train and run neural networks and large language models . This gives GPUs a significant advantage over CPUs in AI workloads in the form of faster training and inference times.

In the healthcare industry, AI is being put to use scanning electronic health records, boosting the discovery of new drugs and detecting abnormalities in medical images. Governments are employing GenAI and natural language processing to make public services more secure, efficient and transparent.LLMs like GPT-4 from OpenAI, while powerful and impressive, are in reality anything but open.
