Seventh-generation California features interior technology upgrades and the addition of hybrid power

Volkswagen has revealed its next-generation California campervan, which brings extensive, wide-ranging upgrades that see the model enter its seventh generation. Set to go on sale in June before deliveries begin in the second half of the year, the new California strongly resembles the California concept previewed by the firm in 2023. The California is now based on the Volkswagen Multivan and sits on the brand’s car-derived MQB architecture.

Plug-in hybrid variants come with Volkswagen’s 4Motion all-wheel-drive system and combine a 1.5-litre turbocharged EVO2 engine with a XXXkWh battery, producing 276bhp and offering an electric-only range of XXX miles. Volkswagen says the PHEV California can tow up to two tonnes. Five specification levels will be available: Beach, Beach Tour, Beach Camper, Coast and the returning, range-topping Ocean.
