Arc has become something of a cult hit on the Mac by offering a different slant on web browsing. It has a distinct design, placing furniture such as the address bar and tabs down the left-hand side of the browser window, instead of at the top.
Other novel Arc features include “easels”, which are similar in concept to Apple’s Freeform, providing a blank canvas where you can jot down ideas and collate images, pulling together photos and information on all the places you’ve shortlisted for a vacation, for example. Picture-in-picture video, meanwhile, lets you carry on watching web videos even if you’ve navigated away from the page the video was on.

The company is also hiring staff to develop a version of the browser for Android. Dubbed Arc Search, the mobile browser is again a very different beast to most browser, behaving more like an AI-powered search engine. You enter a query and ask Arc to “browse for me” and it comes back with a neatly formatted page of answers that don’t require you to visit third-party websites. Whether that’s a good thing for the third-party websites providing the content in the first place is a different matter...
