Recent groundbreaking research by an international team has revealed that Criegee intermediates play a significant role in forming secondary organic aerosols in the troposphere, suggesting these processes are more impactful than previously thought and highlighting areas needing further study.
Eighty-five percent of Earth’s atmosphere is contained within the troposphere, the lowest atmospheric layer. Despite this, significant gaps in our knowledge persist regarding the chemical processes that alter the composition of the troposphere. Using the most advanced methods available for detecting gas-phase molecules and aerosols in the atmosphere, the team took field measurements in the Amazon rainforest, one of the most crucial SOA areas on Earth.
