Nubia has opened pre-orders on its Flip 5G, pitching it as the cheapest foldable smartphone on the market. It's a direct challenge to the premium foldables that dominate the market and could be the first of many industry attempts to make foldables affordable in 2024.While several folding flip phones are on the market, Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip range remains the most visible and will be the natural phone to compare with the Nubia Flip 5G.
The Chinese models are priced at around $455 for the 12 GB RAM and 256 GB storage model and around $510 for the 12 GB RAM and 512 GB model. Global prices are at a similar level . Contrast that to the Galaxy Flip 5’s $999 for a 256 GB model or $1199 for 512 GB, and you can see the immediate attraction of Nubia’s handset.
Perhaps that’s not a fair comparison. The specifications of the Z Flip handsets are near-flagship levels—there are some considerations to the smaller internal volume, which leaves less room for the camera model—but in aggregate, the Z Flip is the top of the line. The Nubia Flip 5G specifications tell the story of a mid-range handset. Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 is the system's heart; charging is by cable only and tops out at 33W. The main camera system is a dual-lens affair with a 50-megapixel main lens and a 2-megapixel depth sensor.
