The AUKUS security pact, formed by Australia, the UK, and the US, is considering involving Japan in specific defence technology projects. This expansion of the partnership has both advantages and disadvantages. The trilateral security arrangement aims to develop Australia's nuclear submarine forces and enhance stability in the Indo-Pacific.

The AUKUS security pact could expand to include collaboration with other like-minded countries. The pact's three founding partners - Australia, the UK and the US - say they are considering involving Japan in specific defence technology projects. Analysts say there are both advantages and disadvantages with expanding the arrangement.

It is this Pillar Two that Mr Albanese says AUKUS members are open to seeing more like-minded nations contribute to. China’s influence in the Indo-Pacific, including its actions in the South China Sea, are part of the backdrop of discussions on regional security. "Defence forces in Japan are called self-defence forces, but there are restrictions on using those forces. So you could have technological co-operation, without Japan necessarily expanding its defence role. In terms of that arrangement being a form of soft-balancing against China."
