I am a physician, healthcare strategy executive, speaker, and writer, focusing on the intersections of healthcare, digital innovation, and policy. I completed an M.D./ J.D. dual-degree with distinguished honors.

One of the boldest emerging sciences is the field of brain-computer interfaces . Broadly speaking, BCIs are essentially tools by which brain signals and thoughts can be relayed into tangible outputs independent of a person’s native muscular functions. The most cited use-case for this technology is often as a means to restore and provide function to patients that have neuromuscular disorders such as cerebral palsy or have been afflicted by paralyzing conditions, such as stroke.

BCIs generally have three components: a device that receives and measures brain activity, often via an implanted chip or a headset; a computer to process and analyze the brain activity, using highly advanced software; and finally, an application or device that will be “controlled” using the brain activity, which is the ultimate output device.

Despite its complexity, the potential applications for this technology, especially as a means to restore function to those afflicted by serious medical conditions, have inspired billions of dollars in investment.describes some key challenges in the field: training users to operate the device, user fatigue, and technical challenges in actually building out the algorithms and software to meaningfully convert brain signals into effective outputs.

Undoubtedly, the future of this technology has to be developed appropriately. For one, strict guidelines and guardrails should be developed to ensure the highest standards of patient safety, privacy and outcomes. Furthermore, innovators behind this hardware and software must take a cautious approach before moving to human trials, given just how serious the procedural and psychological aspects of this technology are.
