Billionaire couple donates $100 million to University of Toronto for AI research, new complex

The university said the gift from Heather Reisman and Gerald Schwartz will help build a new innovation complex that will include a new institute to explore artificial intelligence and its related societal and ethical implications.

The new complex, named the Schwartz Reisman Innovation Centre, will be housed on the eastern edge of the school's downtown campus, will feature two towers and provide space to smaller Canadian companies in addition to the school's researchers. Reisman is the CEO of Indigo, one the country's major book stores, while Schwartz is the CEO of Onex Corporation, a private equity firm.

"It will help consolidate Toronto's leading position in the AI world," Hinton said in a statement. "It will also bring together scholars from an array of disciplines to study the implications of AI in today's world."

They should take that $100 million and put it towards the mental health resources the institution is so incredibly lacking

Wonder if the donation was to setup a ‘Sugar Daddy’ bursary for UFT students

Donate that money as scholarships to those who can’t afford to go to school!

billionaires = evil

It’s great to see rich giving back to community. Thank you 😊

I Think it is extremely thoughtful. Also very generous to think of education etc. Thank you

would be nice if someone buys the whole univ and turns it into private univ. Ont govt rather than funding it collects tax instead.

umm... first thing to build... construction working robots?

would be nice if someone buys the whole univ and turn it into private univ. Save all public funding.

soooooon...we won't need these goyim cattle at all!

Hope someones kids aren't buying their kids scholrship like Lori Loughlin.

God Bless you & your family🙏🏼

Such generosity fantastic for UoT & the students

Itd be nice if they could pay down students debts with that 100 mill... one can only dream

That wealth should have been taxed and put to best public use. You do not amass billions without exploitation. That should not be allowed.

Lefties and their buidings...

Kids can start next semester 😂😂

Here comes the development of SkyNet.

1 if you donate $100M, go ahead and put any kid you want into school. 2 A.I.?!?!? Did they not see Terminator?!?

So when do the kids start the freshman year?

I wonder how much trust fund babies just got into UFT

Nice way to get around paying taxes,I wonder what company they own and how much they'll profit from paying far less taxes because of this 'donation'

This is nice, but I hope there’s some scholarships in there too

That’s how I got into U of T !

Most large scale private donations are anonymous, unless you want your name permanently on a building.

Hey, Peter - U got some competition... As always, my Gillian Wotton Trust is accepting philanthropic donations.

How many kids do they need to get in?
