Switching the power on and off frequently can wreak havoc on household appliances — and surges when power returns can pose an even more significant threat.

“We’re getting a massive number of claims for ‘fried’ computer equipment, fridges, TVs and even distribution boards caused by power surges,” he said.These include unplugging electronics before power outages, installing surge protectors or using surge-protecting strips, using an Uninterrupted Power Supply , or avoiding load-shedding altogether with a solar system or generator.
