Google’s Surprise Update Just Made Android More Like iPhone

There is little to choose between premium Samsung or Apple or even Google smartphones these days. It’s the iPhone versus Android operating systems that set them apart. Now that’s changing as well—and Google’s surprise new update plugs another iPhone-shaped hole on Android devices.Android is changing and changing quickly. On the device side, there’s now little between premium devices—primarily from Samsung—and the latest iPhone flagships.

Now it looks like Google is moving in the same direction, with its latest Google Phone beta showing WhatsApp calls in the recent caller list—just “like an iPhone.” There are hundreds of millions of voice and video calls on WhatsApp every day—meaning billions of fully encrypted minutes. It’s about time that these calls in particular were given the same billing as their normal cellular equivalents, given they have become the norm for so many.
