Nick Young, don't let Twitter name your kid:

Letting fans and consumers name new products — or even babies — sounds like a great idea on paper, but it doesn’t work online.

— Nick Young March 19, 2019 Some are genuine, with many calls for plays on his name But plenty of tricksters are also throwing suggestions like Napster or Nohandles on there, as well as plays on his “Swaggy P” nickname like “Nwaggy” and “Nwaggy P.” And when brands give customers free reign to suggest their own monikers, you get a soccer franchise named Footy McFooty Face or a $243.3 million polar research vessel named Boaty McBoatface.

Greenpeace also launched an online naming contest a decade before to name an endangered humpback whale it had just tagged. Alas, “Mister Splashy Pants” net 78% of the vote, drowning out more serious suggestions like “Aiko,” “Aurora” and “Shanti.” The A.V. Club reported that one voter realized that a person could submit two votes per second by disabling cookies, and so spammed the poll for 38 straight minutes. Many Reddit users also supported “Splashy.

“As soon as firms introduce voting, they are implying a different relationship: ‘We are working together on this,’” agreed fellow Harvard professor Leslie K. John, who co-wrote the report. “Therefore, consumers believe their votes should be counted equally.”
