With the remarks coming a day before U.S. economic data that’s expected to show that hiring is slowing, Musk added that “I don’t know if that makes people comfortable or uncomfortable.” To be clear, Musk said that that isn’t necessarily a bad thing–though he has warned in the past about the dangers that AI might pose to humanity. Letting AI do all the work would surely allow humans to spend more time doing other things they might enjoy more and create enhanced investment opportunities for leisure stocks.
Unfortunately, Musk wasn’t able to go too deeply into his reasoning for why people may not need to work in the future. Evidence suggests that new technology creates more jobs than it destroys, though it surely also changes the kinds of jobs people do. In his remarks, the boss of Tesla pivoted to finding meaning in life as one of the challenges of the future. In that respect, it’s clear that some things never change.
