Hyundai owners can drive to Chicago’s Guaranteed Rate Field this weekend to get a free anti-theft software update aimed to thwart thieves attempting to steal their cars. The car manufacturer is hosting the installation event from Friday to Sunday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the ballpark’s “G” parking lot. The free service comes as motor vehicle thefts in Chicago are up 59% this year and 232% since 2019.
Thieves have targeted Hyundai and Kia vehicles that were built without engine immobilizers, a common anti-theft technology that has long been standard on other vehicle models. Now, Hyundai said it will set up “mobile clinics” at five U.S. locations to provide anti-theft software upgrades for vehicles now regularly targeted by thieves using a technique popularized on TikTok and other social platforms.
