Artificial intelligence technology is being used by predators to generate thousands of images depicting children, some under the age of two, being subjected to “the worst kinds of sexual abuse”.

The faces of bodies of real children are being built into dataset models in order to reproduce new pictures of minors, and the technology can even “nudify” kids whose harmless clothed images are shared on social media by their loved ones.More than 140 showed children between the ages of three and six, while two depicted babies.

“Earlier this year, we warned AI imagery could soon become indistinguishable from real pictures of children suffering sexual abuse, and that we could start to see this imagery proliferating in much greater numbers,” Ms Hargreaves said.“Chillingly, we are seeing criminals deliberately training their AI on real victims’ images who have already suffered abuse. Children who have been raped in the past are now being incorporated into new scenarios because someone, somewhere, wants to see it.

“I would expect the effect of photorealistic imagery, indistinguishable from real children, on those that view the content intentionally or accidentally to be the same as viewing real content. “Child sexual abuse images generated by AI are an online scourge,” Britain’s Home Secretary Suella Braverman said. “The pace at which these images have spread online is shocking.

“Argos covert operatives and victim identification analysts operate on a range of platforms across the internet, including infiltrating child sex offender forums, to keep pace with online threats and trends relating to child sexual abuse,” a Queensland Police spokesperson said. “Any depiction of child exploitation material, whether real or generated by AI, is a criminal offence inThe service urged parents and carers to speak with children about online safety and their digital footprint.

A nationwide call for assistance from the public in developing the tool was made in September, calling on Aussies to provide childhood photographs of themselves.
