The heat energy makes the water molecules near the surface break free from the liquid and escape into the air as gas or water vapor. This is how the water cycle on Earth works, with the sun providing most of the heat.

The researchers say that this phenomenon could have implications for many natural and industrial processes, such as the formation of clouds and fog and seawater desalination using solar energy. It could also help to improve the accuracy of climate models, which currently do not account for this light-induced evaporation.

They were skeptical at first, but they decided to test it themselves using a piece of hydrogel from the other study. To their astonishment, it worked. They then made their hydrogels and confirmed the results. They realized that light was the key factor behind the enhanced evaporation. They also tried to replicate the evaporation rate with electricity instead of light. They heated the hydrogel with an electric current and measured how much water evaporated. Even though they used the same amount of energy as in the light test, they could not exceed the thermal limit of evaporation. However, when they turned on the simulated sunlight, they did. This confirmed that light was causing the extra evaporation.
