Successful CIOs, CTOs & executives from Forbes Technology Council offer firsthand insights on tech & business.

All of today’s technology marvels were built on the work of innovators who came before—including some who lived thousands of years ago. Many of these brilliant minds not only laid the foundations for many of the technologies we use today, but also broke down boundaries to give others the chance to explore science and technology.

I’m fascinated by technologists who mindfully straddle the space between technology and art, and no one has ever walked that line as well as Leonardo da Vinci. Any conversation about technology should include human considerations—“why” as much as “how”—and da Vinci made human nature, as much as human ability, his focus. I would love to know what propelled him, what interested him and why. -

I’ve always been fascinated by astronomy, and getting a chance to meet and talk with Galileo, the father of modern observational astronomy, would be thrilling. Galileo’s tools and strong sense of observation and recording helped mankind start to grasp the universe’s properties. Many believe that the keys to mankind’s continued existence are somewhere in the universe. -

I would love to pick Grace Hopper’s brain over coffee. A computer scientist and mathematician, Hopper is credited with creating the first compiler, a tool that converts programming languages readable by humans into machine code. This has been pivotal in all of technology’s creations today! She faced gender bias and is an inspiration for women in technology. -

Hedy Lamarr was not just a famous movie star—she also helped invent a way for radios to hop from one frequency to another. This idea is part of what makes Wi-Fi and Bluetooth work today. Talking with her would be interesting because she shows that you can be creative and technical at the same time. It’d be great to hear how she came up with her invention and balanced her two very different careers.

I’d like to speak with Ken Olsen, the co-founder of Digital Equipment Corporation. I would like to understand his view on computers and discuss how his company created so many products, including the VAX computer, the Alpha chip and AltaVista. Finally, I’d ask him what he felt the pitfalls were when it came to the commercialization of some of these product lines. -
