"It is important that we understand how deforestation of the Amazon ecosystem is contributing to climate warming. If deforestation is warming surrounding regions, this would have big implications for people living in those areas.”
One of the greatest carbon sinks in the world, the Amazon rainforest stores enormous volumes of carbon dioxide . Deforestation in the region, therefore, releases stored carbon into the atmosphere, increasing greenhouse gas emissions and exacerbating the problem of global warming and climate change.
“The regional warming due to Amazon deforestation will have negative consequences for the 30 million people living within the Amazon basin, many of whom are already exposed to dangerous levels of heat,” the researchers wrote in their paper. Furthermore, deforestation in the Amazon can set off feedback loops that intensify climate change. For instance, increasing deforestation can raise the temperature, which can increase the frequency and intensity of wildfires. More carbon is then released into the atmosphere by these wildfires. As such, it is clear that the Amazon's influence on the Earth's climate is not limited to South America.
