“I do not know how such an act can be defended. The United States has historically denounced this practice,” Ocasio-Cortez wrote on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter.Starlink is a constellation of thousands of satellites orbiting the Earth that aim to provide low-cost and high-speed internet access to remote areas. SpaceX has launched more than 5,000 Starlink satellites so far and plans to deploy up to 42,000 in the future.
The communication shutdown was also confirmed by Jawwal, the Palestinian telecoms provider, which said that the heavy bombardment destroyed all remaining international routes connecting Gaza to the outside world. Global internet monitor NetBlocks reported a collapse in connectivity in Gaza with a high impact on Paltel, Jawwal’s owner.
This is not the first time that Starlink has been offered as a solution to communication problems in conflict zones. In February 2022, Starlink was deployed in Ukraine shortly after Russia advanced its forces in the country. The network helped Ukrainian soldiers to communicate and coordinate in areas where other means of communication were down.
