Like deep-dish pizza and heartbreaking sports teams, the suburban corporate campus is part of the fabric of Chicagoland. That daily trek to the office — no longer required in many a post-pandemic workforce — supported local businesses and shaped the identities of pleasant bedroom communities like Deerfield, Glenview, Schaumburg, Hoffman Estates, Northbrook, Naperville and plenty of others.
But some of the arguments made by Ace resonate: If the people working in the company’s hardware stores and distribution centers can’t do their jobs remotely, why should its corporate headquarters be any different? “We want to be together more than we’re apart,” Kane Calamari, the company’s chief human resources officer and its executive in charge of the headquarters project, told us.
