Surprisingly, female European common frogs tend to remain immobile and fake death in order to dissuade prospective mates. Tonic immobility was seen in 33 percent of female frogs grasped by males. The frog exhibits this behavior by tightening its limbs and legs and spreading them outwards to seem dead.

However, the researchers mention that these behaviors may have alternative functions, potentially including the evaluation of the male's physical strength and stamina.
