Autonomous medical needles are innovative devices designed to perform medical procedures, such as injections or blood sampling, with minimal human intervention. These needles incorporate various technologies to enhance precision and reduce the risk of complications such as imaging, sensing and robotics.

To get to a lung nodule, the steerable needle must circumnavigate many anatomical hurdles. To help it on its path, the needle needs to have a destination in mind in order to cut through the right tissue and leave the rest intact.To achieve this, the research team built three-dimensional models of the lung, including the airways, blood arteries, and the chosen target, using CT scans of the subject's thoracic cavity.
