Amazon lanzó el viernes sus primeros satélites de prueba para el servicio de internet que tiene planeado que compita con la red de banda ancha de SpaceX.

El cohete Atlas V de United Launch Alliance despegó con un par de satélites de prueba, dando inicio a un programa que pretende mejorar la cobertura global de internet hasta llegar a 3.236 satélites en órbita. Amazon planea comenzar a ofrecer su servicio para finales del próximo año. SpaceX, compañía de Elon Musk, le lleva una enorme ventaja a Amazon y a su propietario Jeff Bezos, quien es dueño de su propia empresa espacial, Blue Origin.

La empresa europea Eutelsat OneWeb también está lanzando satélites de internet, y tiene alrededor de 600 en órbita. Amazon acordó en un principio colocar los satélites en el primer lanzamiento del cohete Vulcan de ULA. Pero el Vulcan presentó problemas y no volará al menos hasta finales del año, por lo que Amazon optó por el Atlas V.
