The company plans to send more than 3,000 pieces of hardware into low Earth orbit over the next six years for its space Wi-Fi business.

Amazon.com went to space to start a new business, but it has nothing to do with delivering packages to the moon. It’s about delivering Wi-Fi to Earthlings and competing with Elon Musk’s SpaceX.

“This is Amazon’s first time putting satellites into space, and we’re going to learn an incredible amount regardless of how the mission unfolds,” said Rajeev Badyal, Project Kuiper’s vice president of technology, in a Tuesday blog post. It will take Amazon an estimated six years to send thousands of satellites into space because no company or country has matched SpaceX’s launch capacity.

SpaceX amassed about one million users at the end of 2022. At the pace of recent additions, that number could hit two million by the end of this year. At two million users, Starlink should have revenue of at least $2 billion a year, with annual growth of roughly 100%. That growth makes space-based Wi-Fi appealing to Amazon as well, but just how profitable space-based Wi-Fi can be isn’t known yet.
