The Department of Justice looks to back its claims that Google (GOOG, GOOGL) holds a monopoly in the search engine space.Yahoo Finance’s Brad Smith and Julie Hyman speak with Bill Baer, Former Assistant Attorney General of the Antitrust Division, who addresses how the outcome of this case could impact the future of internet platforms.“The implications really are huge,” Baer says, pointing out Google could face significant restrictions or be forced to divest certain business segments if the judge finds evidence of monopolization to be true.Referencing a similar suit aimed at Microsoft (MSFT) over 20 years ago, Baer believes Google could become “much more antitrust-sensitive” as the government prepares “backward-looking” and “forward-looking” arguments.

Co-host Jessica Tarlov was discussing how social media companies must “figure out a system to stop people from spreading” disinformation and misinformation about vaccines, though she was also was skeptical of Meta temporarily blocking searches for vaccine information. In a rare post-trial hearing, a court security officer testified before the judge overseeing former Trump adviser Peter Navarro's contempt of Congress case, after Navarro's attorneys moved for a mistrial. Navarro, who under Donald Trump was director of the White House Office of Trade and Manufacturing Policy, was found guilty last week of two counts of contempt of Congress for defying a subpoena issued in February 2022 by the House select committee investigating the Jan.
