The Slinky, a toy coil spring, was accidentally invented by American engineer Richard James in 1943. But as Monica Smith, who works with the Smithsonian's Lemelson Center for the Study of Invention and Innovation tells us, it was his wife, Betty James, who named the Slinky, marketed it and ran the company.
