Workplace Relations Minister Tony Burke says the government is considering ways to stop workers losing their jobs as AI threatens redundancies.

Employers may be required to train staff in the technology that might displace them, as part of changes the Albanese government is considering to keep workers in jobs threatened by artificial intelligence.

Separate from these changes, Mr Burke told a University of Sydney event last Thursday that there was “a lot of work” being done on artificial intelligence and the government wanted to ensure that workers were given an opportunity to use the technology to avoid redundancies. Governments have been grappling with how to regulate AI since late last year when OpenAI launched ChatGPT and surprised the world with how capable generative AI had become.

Mr Burke assured the University of Sydney audience that when it came to the future of AI, “I start with a policy principle which is if you try to fight technology, you’re on the losing side of the battle”.
