Thousands of people a day are having their irises scanned in the far-flung outposts of Worldcoin, a nonprofit foundation co-founded by Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, the tech startup that’s behind the viral chatbot ChatGPT.

I went ahead anyway, in part because I’m fairly sure that at least one other corporation has a detailed photo of my iris, and like Wagner, I’m interested in new technology. I haven’t received any WLD tokens, but my orb operator did agree to snap a couple of photos of me.

Next, the app displayed a QR code with instructions to show the code to the orb. I did, and a small light flashed the orb’s approval. The whole process could have taken about a minute, although with me asking lots of questions, it lasted about 15 minutes.
