When sunlight hits solar panels, it doesn’t all get turned into electricity.
Large electrical transmissions lines are pictured along the Trinity River levee and Margaret McDermott Bridges near downtown Dallas, Wednesday, June 30, 2021. When more solar energy is being produced than can be transmitted in electrical lines, the grid may be overpowered. “If it’s hot and solar power is on then it’s very valuable right now,” said Jan Kleissl, an engineer at the University of California San Diego. “But if you have too much solar power, then…[it’s] not valuable at all.”To address overproduction, many new projects plan to store any excess solar energy generated during the day using large batteries.
