Opinion: AI can bring enormous benefits, but also risks. Federal moves to regulate the AI industry won’t help people harmed by AI to get compensation for any injuries and losses

The current reality is that anyone with an AI-related injury can face more barriers to obtaining compensation than victims of human wrongdoers usually do. Even identifying whom to sue is one such barrier. Typically, many players are involved in developing complex AI systems.

If the designers of a system can’t explain how an output was reached, it’s easy to imagine the barriers that an injured party will have in proving what went wrong, and who among many people or companies involved with the AI system was at fault.
