Innovation from Oppo, Yulife and Melon | This month, we take a look at Oppo’s first flip phone, the Find N2 Flip; an insurance app called YuLife, for companies with a wellness focus; and a new digital MVNO called Melon Mobile

, launched last month and will piggyback on the MTN network. It will offer customisable and flexible plans, and SIM cards can be ordered via its app or website.

Aimed at the 18- to 25-year-old market, there are no stores to walk into: everything is done digitally via an Android and iOS app, including its self-Rica process. Customers just need to scan their smart ID or green ID book, confirm their address and take a selfie, and, within a few minutes, it should be approved.

The SIM cards are free, and users can start on a trial basis for 30 days, with 1GB of data, 100 voice minutes and 100 texts. Melon says its data does not expire if customers have an active paid-up subscription. Customers can choose plans by selecting allocations of data, voice and texts suited to their needs, which can be chopped and changed monthly. From this month, Melon will also offer an eSIM option for smartphones and wearables, and customers can do a SIM swap at no cost. If you are an MTN customer and want to access an eSIM on prepaid, this would make sense.
