We’ve seen some realistic AI-generated pictures go viral in recent weeks. Here are our top tips on what to look out for if you suspect an image might be fake.

You may come across an early edition of the image where the creator admits how they made it. If the image is only appearing on social media sites and hasn’t been published by a reliable news website, this may be a clue it isn’t real.

Something else to check is whether images of the scenario taken from different angles also exist. A politician or celebrity doing something unexpected whilst out and about is likely to have been photographed by multiple people, producing slightly different pictures of the same thing. You can do this by searching for images using keywords describing the image in question.

With the fake image of Julian Assange, a clue that the image wasn’t a genuine leak was that Mr Assange’s wife,However, this isn’t always a guarantee. Another tip is to look at the image size. These images are often made in 512*512 or 512*768 and then doubled or quadrupled to get better quality, so if the image has a size that is a multiple of that, there's a good chance it was generated.

This advice will be good for 6 months, a year tops.

But not the trump picture, that really wasn't realistic, unless the viewer of it is so blinkered that they can't see beyond their own nose
