Calls to pause the development of powerful new artificial intelligence programs such as ChatGPT will play into the hands of China and Russia and are “naive at best”, one of Australia’s most successful tech investors has warned.

“This pause should be public and verifiable, and include all key actors. If such a pause cannot be enacted quickly, governments should step in and institute a moratorium.” Governments around the world urgently needed to intervene in the adoption of technologies such as ChatGPT, which have been adopted so rapidly and with so few “guard rails” they are already showing signs of doing enormous social harm, Dr Wallace said.She said a six-month moratorium wasn’t “anywhere near enough time” for companies to start using AI responsibly, but it was as much as big tech would likely agree to.

In a statement, Mr Husic said both businesses and government needed to act on concerns about how AI was used.“I’ve been urging not only government but businesses and researchers to take these developments seriously for years – since before becoming minister,” he said, adding that the matters raised by the AI open letter were very much on the agenda of the government.
