THE Department of Science and Technology (DoST) has provided processing equipment for squash-based products that could help reduce post-harvest losses of local farmers.

On March 21, the DoST Provincial Science and Technology Office Nueva Ecija Provincial Director Leidi Mel Sicat said that the project aims 'to process their surplus harvest into squash-based products, such as squash noodles, flour, and chips.' 'Squash is one of the crops grown in the municipality. However, due to the large volume of harvest, farmers are usually forced to sell their produce at low prices or even at a loss while the rest are left to rot and spoil,' Sicat said.

The cooperatives given the equipment were from the villages of Bagong Sikat, Bantug, Carugang, Bugnan and Cupaya, all in Gabaldon town. The equipment consists of stainless steel working tables; a digital platform scale; a dough mixer; a digital weighing scale; a noodle maker; a deep fryer; a cooling rack; blenders; and a foot stamp sealer. Sicat said that members would undergo educational training to provide education on using this equipment.
