Imagine stepping out of the office during your lunchbreak for a quick virtual visit to a beach in Thailand, a museum in Italy, atop a mountain on the Lesotho plains, or to space, to wander through the cosmos. | AlekBlak

In January this year, Sensiks, in partnership with U.WELL, launched the first sensory wellness pod experience in South Africa at the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town. The pods are equipped with multiple sensory inputs that simulate light, sound, smell and temperature while integrated with the visual experience.

Over the years, VR therapy has gained popularity as a strategy for mental healthcare and there are many approaches to this. This is because VR can offer a non-invasive and drug-free approach to managing mental conditions.

"It can be concluded that self-efficacy plays an important role in VR therapy, possibly by breaking an avoidance behaviour pattern and increasing the belief about one's own capacity, and maybe thereby the motivation in patients to go further in the process of exposure," the study said. The research around the use of VR for healthcare – even though it's still a fairly new area of research – offers strong evidence in favour of its use.
