In conversation with VF, TikTok researcher Marcus Bosch ponders the possibility (and precedents) of an FYP walled off from Americans—plus, how AI will destroy social media, anyway.

I'm not so very sure about that, because I think the whole debate in the US is pretty irrational, right? We haven't seen evidence that TikTok data is controlled by China. These weird things that I keep on hearing that the Chinese government wants to like, make people dumber in the US—we don’t need China for that, right? Europe is more complicated, because with the European Union, you have many many many voices.

Would you say that the general panic around TikTok is overblown? Is it actually kind of silly that we’ve turned this fun entertainment app into such a political topic?way more than silly dancers—I don’t have to tell you that. Of course there are problems, but we have the same exact problems with all the other platforms. My question would be, what’s the lens that we choose to look at—is it political and geostrategic? Yeah, it’s “us versus China.” Is it motivated by economic reasons? For sure.

I personally think it was a fantastic PR move. Because even on a visual level, you see he's like a version of a young Mark Zuckerberg. He’s even opened like his hoodie zipper, right? There were so many people being like,.

All these apps are not going to be all be here for the next 100 years anyhow, right? With GPT4 and the whole AI thing, you can already sense it. That stuff is going to destroy stuff like Instagram. Why would you post videos or images of yourself when every one of your friends can recreate that in one prompt? So it won’t make sense to show authenticity or realness. It’s definitely going to change the game. But I don’t think TikTok will go away in the next year.

But if it does, I’m trying to imagine the American music industry driving all their musicians down to the border, and forcing everyone to post their TikToks from there.
