Biblioracle: We should be thinking deeply about what these AI tools mean for authorship and the consumption of novels and short stories.

There used to be a cliché that every lawyer had a draft of a novel stashed in a desk drawer somewhere, the joke being that deep down they wanted to be writers, but had the good sense to do something sensible, like go to law school.

Apparently, a raft of wannabe writers decided to utilize the ChatGPT large language model to crank out short stories and then submit them to a number of science fiction and fantasy publications. The publications — Clarkesworld, The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction and Asimov’s Science Fiction — have been so flooded with these AI-generated stories that they had to stop accepting new submissions.

Perhaps others see a chance at a few quick bucks. All of these magazines pay, so getting $500 for a couple of minutes of work is maybe tempting. Over the years, I’ve met my share of human writers who believe in the principle of throwing enough stuff at the wall until something sticks.I get it, the appearance of ChatGPT has freaked everyone out a bit. It seems almost magical in the way that it can create fluent syntax from a prompt.

While you can coach it into offering an evaluation of a text that seems sort of convincing, it is not reading. It cannot think or create. It has no taste. It does not react to a narrative in the way people do. If a story is suspenseful or funny or sad, ChatGPT has no idea because it does not experience stories.
