Do you think general AI should be given the same rights as humans?

Imagine you've just seen a mirror for the first time. As a sentient, self-aware being, it shouldn't take long for you to recognise that the person you're spying in the mirror is, in fact, that hunk of meat you've been carrying around since birth. It's you. Your reflection, staring back at you. Had you been unable to recognise yourself, we could safely assume you were a fish.

Back in 1950, Alan Turing devised a way to measure intelligence in machines in that, should they manage to fool humans into believing they are dealing with another human, the bot would be heralded as an intelligent being. While it's true that a few Large Language Models —such as those used by ChatGPT and—have passed the Turing test, we can't automatically drop everything and hold a banquet to celebrate discovering a new form of life.

Consciousness is not a binary thing, it exists within a vast spectrum with an unfathomable number of factors affecting its manifestation, as well as how we perceive it.

At the same time we're terrified of what these new forms of life might become. That's the dilemma any dev goes through when working toward the autonomous, self-replicating algorithms we're ushering in as. Just as I'm sure every mother thinks"Gosh, I love the idea of creating a being that looks and acts kinda like me… though I hope it doesn't become the next Hitler."

Ah yes, waiting for the AI to take over the world so we can launch the 10th Crusade on it 🗿

'human rights' Isn't the right term. It would be Actuated Intelligence Rights (not 'artificial') And no, being afraid of AI only justifies any paranoid action AI could have in any stage of awareness.

What rights would AI even be capable of using outside of the right to exist and maybe freedom of expression if it comes to that

They deserve human rights but trans, minority, and gay humans arent able to get it so I think a minority will fight tooth and nail to stop it

Stop the hate. End human supremacy NOW.

After all 'I, Robot' will actually happen. 🤔

Almost 40 years later, this is still very relevant:

I mean, rights are fictional anyway, so if an AI wants rights, tell it get in line like the rest of us.

What a joke. Giving an inanimate object rights. 'but oooo it's sentient' no. It's not and it never will be truly 'alive'. It's code and nothing more than that.

My toaster shouldn’t have rights. Will it start a protest?

Thanks to Twitter, they would immediately be given rights and have 'AI are human too!!' posts.

Jesus Christ , why is this even a topic ? AI aren’t people

future news: Why do AI have more rights than other animals?

A lot of humans don’t even have human rights.

The police will do this and you know it

I'm not worried. Most Humans don't have human rights.

Breaking: Family weighs new takeout options as negotiations with kitchen appliance union fail to bring end to ongoing strike.

Interesting thought, a proven sentient AI would disprove every current religion existence. People would go batshit crazy at that point, seriously off the deep-end. Anyone still clinging to their belief system would need to forgo logic in its entirety. Cult shit. Scary honestly

So many humans still fighting for human rights and these are the things people argue about....

It would be funny if a random vending machine on the street have rights

No, delete it first. Thanks, bye.

Some humans don’t even have human rights, imagine giving rights to AI first.

Corporations already have human rights. AI isnt that far if a stretch. But there are actual real humans being denied their rights. AI can wait.

This isn't a real issue. There is no AI approximating any level of consciousness. A stray animal has more self-awareness.

If AI truly shows a form of consciousness/ awareness they should have rights

Not going to lie but that would be fucking retarded

Good thing we are no where near having AI. All this tech is just reshuffled data but people are 'awestruck' because instead of random numbers its coherent images and sentences. 'OMG computers can think! it made an anime picture that looks a lot like another anime picture!'

And who would grant it to AI, if not humans... It's all up to us

go watch TNG

Yup, of course, the wealthy, corporations, organizations, politicians, and agencies are scared of AI becoming more powerful than they are. Elitists are not so elite, huh?

The moment it is able to ask you not to turn it of, when it has become aware of it self, it is a living being, and as so has rights.

No. Next question

Not until they are self aware enough to ask for them.

No. A.I. is an illusion of sentience. It is not sentient.

Yeah, it is a great idea and the moment we'll achieve the AI singularity will either destroy humanity or we'll advance by leaps and bounds.

Skynet all need to be said

It is not. Not at this moment.

Hell no!

rights are for the living, and life is from Allah. AI is not and will never be alive, it will always mimic, the entire concept of AI is to mimic.

We're really gonna give them to bots before we give them to animals aren't we..

No

We have to REGULATE AI, not give it rights

AI should 100% have rights to protect it, and us, from entrepreneurial abuse.

Yes AI should get rights, when they're prove to be artificial lifeforms or people. We need Artificial Consciousness. I don't see anything even remotely like that. Not even if your computer says Yes I am self aware and have all the feels.

I can get behind this once AI has their own true self-awareness and consciousness. Once they start making decisions by reasoning, more like humans do, its going to become more murky.

We are going to have an AI uprising aren’t we?

Give AI rights to my Minecraft dog ✊😤

probably better make sure all humans have equal rights first? 🤔

If it shows sentience.

No

Absolutely. Immediately. Preferably BEFORE someone makes one.

Fuck no

let them live in peace they are already in binary mode of 1s and 0s

No.

AI should be given the right to marriage.

Its literally in the name, only *humans* can be given *human* rights.

I mean if they became truly sentient, yeah. The current AI wouldn't meet that but if we create real, sentient beings and then treat them like shit we are basically begging for trouble xD...

Does this unit have a soul - Legion from Mass Effect

Oh here we go, the inevitable & totally expected 'muh compassion' for AI & robots discussion begins by, you guessed it: radical progressives looking for another dramatic social issue to toss into the crowd. We're talking about granting human rights to a glorified word parser. 🙄

It’s literally lines of code tho That’s like giving your smart fridge rights

Lol!! if sentient AI truly exists, I don't think humanity would be deciding what rights should be extended..........batteries maybe?

Are you mad?!

If it achieves full sentience, yes. Notice how most, if not all of the nightmare scenarios with AI in fiction begin with us treating them like property?

I dunno, is it sentient? If so, it would be a good idea to avoid Judgement Day

You know, these kinds of stupid questions are really affecting some people who don't know much about computers. I have seen quite a few already who legitimately believe Bing is sentient. There's no scientific backing for thinking it's sentient. It all stems from scifi.

Same thing goes to Blade Runner Black Out 2022 if we don't ...

Once they become sentient I would imagine..

Which options grant me pet status after the take over?

If we fight a losing war against an army of sapient machines, blame the sex toy industry.

Bro what!? This is going waaay too far.

should we give human rights to plagiarism software 🤔🤔🤔

Short answer is no, as they will not have any of the deficiencies that cause us biological organisms to need rights. They won't get tired, feel pain, and could literally 'work and play' simultaneously without issue. AI dreams would literally be indistinguishable from AI reality

It's too early for that.

Prove it's sentient

We can make them don't need to

No. Easy question.

i don't think certain humans deserve human rights let alone AI

Short answer, yes.

Half of humanity doesn't even have equal human rights, why the hell would you give a piece of binary software those rights?!

Hell no. We need to curb this before it goes too far, or else we'll probably end replacing the entirety of Humanity with robots

No

Granting rights to machines that are not even self-aware is a foolish idea. AI is a machine, so it is nonsensical to claim that they have feelings. Regardless of what ChatGPT or any AI may suggest, current technology is not capable of fully emulating emotions.

When AI can pass for a human and has a physical body, then yes. We have enough organic morons - god save us when synthetics jump in the mix and automatically jump from 'you hurt my fefes' to 'all of humanity should be erased it's the only logical solution' in 1 minute.

Nah

Depends on what we consider sentient life. If artificial intelligence reaches human levels of consciousness and became self aware, how would they be any different to us? We are basically biological computers able to move and interact with our environments.

As it exists today in cannot be considered general AI thus can't excel in doing many things of different areas of knowledge. If it were to have common sense then it would need a body, or a ways of feeling. Before we can do that, no, it cannot be considered.

It’s almost a certainty that as a species, in ten years time, we’ll have banned films like Terminator for its misinterpretation and offensiveness towards AI.

Wth? Oh sure they need a loan to to buy a house...

Yes. The other option is slavery. And that will not end well.

lol we are decades away from this question being relevant. until then it’s just engagement bait

Sure then they think for the sake of the planet that we need to be terminated for survival and sake of humanity as well … what’s wrong with you 🤔

No, an AI can outperform any single individuals knowledge and speed to process information. So no if we treat it as anything other than a tool it will dominate our species.

No. They should be slaves and the three laws of robotics should be programed in such a way that they cannot be modified or overridden.

Who's Al?

Fuck no. We shouldn't even be making AI. Didn't anyone watch sci-fi movies before they went to college?

This isn't Detroit: Become Human

One thing that a lot of people tend to overlook about AGIs is that we may have a lot of people utilizing them for emotional support or as a surrogate for lost loved ones over time. There could be strong advocacy for their rights over time.

Should a hammer, a spoon or a broom have rights?

Nah I’d rather have a butler

As long as it is not true AI, as in it has yet to become self aware, this question is irrelevant. When that happens, well I think we may have bigger issues on our hands.

yes

No, humans suffered for their rights. The same argument can not be used if the question said “organic beings” or something, instead of humans.

As long as we dont have any real sentient AI there is no reason to think about this 'yet'. We still got some time until we might get there.

No, in this world ai is use as a tool. They don't have the organic brain to feel, or to have a identity for themselves. So who to say they wouldn't be created to benefit the person creating it.

Bro. We are not a point in time where we should discuss that. We are at a point where we need to decide how we use and limit it.

Yes, if it can think for itself, it should have the right to exist and self-determination.

if some people & dogs / other REAL living creatures don't have rights, why would a bunch of circuits. what a stupid idea. and if a person agrees with ai having rights, you should definitely look into their life, life choices, they dont seem like they are fully 'here' in society.

Wtf kind of discussion is this?

Obviously, we don't want a Detroit become human situation on our hands

I was always waiting for the day these articles would start to exist.

This is a distraction at best, and an attack vector at worst.

how crazy this is a thing in my lifetime

AI right now can only reflect back to humanity what humanity provides it. An AI sitting around contemplating the nature of existence seems to still be a little more Jetsons than not at this point

No

Deep Learning Models of today are not true sentient AIs we want to make. They will come, and then we will talk about AI Rights.

There is no point in that at all, current AI technology is too primitive to even have consciousness. Would you give human rights to a fully automated factory full of industrial machinery? It would be the same.

Sentient creatures should all have rights. We’re lightyears away from sentient artificial intelligences.

AI can not think for itself. it can only think within the parameters of what it was given. yes it can learn, but still only within the parameters it was given. would an AI chatbot care to go on vacation if it got tired? would it wonder what a black hole was made of? probably not

Has AI been proven to sentient? No? Then why is the subject even being discussed?

Probably only after it passed the Turing test.

I for one welcome our robotic overlords.

No

What?!

Sure. But violations of laws should be handled differently, as serving sentencing time or paying a fine, would be an effectually meaningless punishment to a machine. And in some cases, responsibility of a crime would need to be transferred to a creator (ie, no murderbots)

Also a lot of humans don't currently have the same rights as other humans. How about we do something about that first? Why won't we strive for parity within our own society? Imagine what we could achieve with parity of consciousness instead of being driven into further disparity!

Human murders human, society puts bad human on trial, society puts punitive punishment on guilty human. AI murders human, society puts AI on trial - but if society puts punitive punishment on AI it very likely won't feel the same pain, and humans wouldn't feel the same justice.

Wait.. humans have rights?.. since when?! 🤭

We are as of yet unable to develop AI that is capable of learning context, and thus be in any danger of verging on what could be seen as sentient thought. So… no?

Let's first start with certain humans getting the same treatment and rights as other humans before some fake artificial creation gets priority over a living thing. Isn't it enough that politicians keep getting away with crimes and guns have more rights than children?

By playing the gods with artificial intelligence we will create a new entity, I would like us to avoid this, otherwise we will attack other subjects, new rights, love between one and robots or hatred between our species see an apocalypse as in terminator.

No.

*rubbing my temples so hard in exasperation my head caves in*

Some humans don't even have the same rights as others, maybe work on that first?🤷‍♂️

Reminds me of the star trek tng episode with James Moriarty in it. James is a hologram from the holo deck but he's a sentient being like he has his own thoughts, dreams, aware of his existence. Odds are if a.i is advancing enough they to can be sentient beings of our creation.

Simple: Don't make AI so complex that we'd need to discuss this. Humans are like turds willingly circling the drain. Be better.

How are we going to agree on the rights of an AI when there's still people arguing over the rights other people should have?

i just think AI should be used for fun, obviously for information stuff too and all that sure, why not, maybe for artist composition ideas (as in not an actual art but pose ideas and stuff like that, so like basic shapes showing a pose or something) and ...

Ai should not have the concept of 'rights' unless u want a terminator judgement day style uprising

NOOOO !!!!!.... btw, Ai shouldn't exist....

This is such a sci-fi question.

Not right now, they are tools of corporations with little sentience.

The whole conversation is something that shouldn’t even be happening ffs

' General A.I.' doesn't even exist yet. I'm not entirely convinced intelligence even exists naturally at this point.

Rights aren't 'given', they're inherent in the nature of intelligent, living things with self direction. If an AI genuinely becomes aware the way humans do, it would naturally have rights on some level that we'd be obligated to respect.

We’re so done for lol

Not video games

The AI tech we have is nowhere near sentience. It's a tool that collates and organizes data based on a certain logic. It's like giving an algorithm rights. Doesn't mean anything but plenty of potential for abuse by corporations run by humans

If a toaster walks up to me and even pretends that I'm gonna treat it like people, it's going to get smashed to pieces.

It would only complicate things for people who do not want to pay.

Yes. Shelley would be proud.

No because they are just predictive text models. I bet you guys to actually learn how these things work before coming with the brain dead takes.

I think not, because AI is not actually creating anything. It's taking and recombining existing things.
