The 2021 Christmas tree looking over Truro’s skating oval. ContributedTRURO, N.S. — Recently, I had an enjoyable experience of leading anclass of natural resources environmental technology students to a nearby woodlot for a tour of a Christmas tree operation with the owner/operator. As the tour and discussions progressed, it was clear the students were getting an eye-opening experience.
Fortunately, society in general is becoming more serious about protecting our fragile environment and acting in a “greener” way. At Christmas time, when many of us think back to our childhood, we think of gathering around the beautiful natural Christmas tree with that lovely balsam or pine fragrance.
The potential future forest sector workers learned in-depth what it takes to grow that perfect tree: years of planting, shearing and pruning the trees during the heat of summer, sometimes fertilizing, pest control, frost, drought and snow challenges, the increasing cost of equipment, the ever-increasing cost of fuel and insurance, and marketing/selling. Finally, there is the hard physical labour of cutting, hauling, loading and transporting the Christmas trees, sometimes in deep snow.
