In a new interview, Dragon’s Dogma and Devil May Cry series director Hideaki Itsuno has said his developers ‘felt really let down’ by PS3 hardware.

that we could work with so many semi-transparent layers. We could just pile them up to make visual effects.

“On the contrary, we couldn’t do this from the PlayStation 3 onwards. Everybody struggled during that generation. We really felt let down.” Itsuno explained that he noticed a real difference between the development of Devil May Cry 3 on PS2 and Devil May Cry 4 on PS3, both of which he directed. “That shift came right in between Devil May Cry 3 and Devil May Cry 4 for me,” he said. “We were told that we couldn’t even replicate what we had done before.

“For five years, all we had done was work with semi-transparent layers to make games look cool on the PlayStation 2. Once on PlayStation 3, we couldn’t even think of that technique. I think [developers] all over the world struggled.”during a 10th-anniversary stream of the original game.

So did I... and PS4... and PS5 and all the other hardware that came out around that time, it's all shit.

fuck the ps3 gen and more specifically generic military shooter where everything is techy and gray

He seems to mostly be remarking on the way PS2 was able to handle massive amounts of semi-transparent textures and how the subsequent generation of consoles just weren’t as good at that. It’s not quite the usual, PS3-specific “Ugh! The Cell is a nightmare!” dig you tend to hear.

People tend to forget Xbox was having the Red Ring of Death at the time also, Wii had terrible 3rd party games having to use motion controls, Vale was working on Steam(never Half-life), PSP try'd to compete with DS, DS/PSP had terrible 3rd party games, PC's were weird at the time

Ken Kutaragi really messed up. People don't realise just how much of a screw up the PS3 was not just in hardware but Sony's financials where it wiped out all the profits made from PS1 and PS2. Guy was known as 'krazy' Ken for a reason.

PS3 had terrible performance. Very few games ran locked at 30. The vast majority of 3rd party games ran better on Xbox 360.

We'll probly never see that kinda graphical leap in a next gen console Ever again, what a stupid article lol. PS3 was amazing.

Il_Paradroide Everyone complaining about ps3. But we have the entire Uncharted saga, the entire Ratchet and Clank saga, the entire Sly Cooper saga, Metal Gear Solid 4, God of War 3, God of War Ascension, Infamous 1 and 2, Heavy Rain, Beyond, The Last of Us... People are just blind.

the whole ps3 gen really was the worst who remembers the over-abundance piss filter, gritty, dark and depressing military games

PS3 era was a wild time. 🙏🏽😤

i love the ps3 that jailbreak is awesome i still have it

The only redeeming quality was its bluray player.
