The province’s top athletes received some hardware yesterday afternoon, courtesy of the Premier.

Over 125 of the province’s athletes were honoured at the 18th annual Premier’s Athletic Awards in St. John’s.The Team Gushue awards were also presented at the ceremony, which honours the squad’s 2006 Olympic gold medal win, and gives $5,000 to two athletes who excel in both academics and athletics. Jaida Lee of St. John’s received the award for her dominant year of baseball, including a trailblazing performance at the Canada Summer Games where she became the first female to compete in men’s baseball.

Liam Drover-Mattinen of Portugal Cove-St. Phillips also received the award for his performance in tennis, where he finished second at an International Tennis Federation J3 event in Montreal, knocking off the top-ranked player in Canada in the process.
