ustralian universities are preparing to educate and create a workforce that is knowledgeable about the defence ecosystem.
The chief executive of Universities Australia, Catriona Jackson, says universities want to partner with defence and the defence industry to create the sustainable workforce and leading edge technology the nation needs. The universities need to be prepared to respond in an adaptable and efficient manner to a clear demand signal from defence in terms of workforce needs – both skills and numbers – as well as technology and hardware needs.
Funded this year by the Department of Education Skills and Employment , the Defence Trailblazer is one of six university-led programs across different industry sectors that are designed to enhance the commercialisation of universities’ research through closer interaction with industry.
The Defence Trailblazer is designed to enable similar innovation, at scale and at speed: it reflects Professor Monro’s focus on “asymmetry, acceleration and urgency”. “Critically, these programs will be deliberately aligned with the ADF’s most pressing capability priorities, such as quantum technologies and hypersonics.”“Equally important, the Defence Trailblazer will feature a workforce innovation and culture program aimed at bringing defence companies and universities more closely together in support of Australia’s national security interests.”
Some 50 per cent of Australia’s PhDs in physics come from ANU, so the university has invested $200 million in a new, world-class Research School of Physics facility which will support teaching and research into quantum physics, precision optics, space applications and novel devices.
