A fibre project in the township of Kayamandi outside Stellenbosch has connected more than 3,000 homes to fast, uncapped internet. The Kayamandi Fibre Project aims to deploy 30,000 connections in the community and serve as a template to bridge the digital divide.More than 3,000 households in the township of Kayamandi on the outskirts of Stellenbosch now have fibre connections, affording residents fast, uncapped internet access for just R5 a day.
"There's a massive unfairness when it comes to internet connectivity," said Shireen Powell, CEO of Project Isizwe, explaining the driving force behind the Kayamandi Fibre Project during a presentation at the AfricaTech conference in Cape Town on Thursday. The plan is to deploy fibre to every single home in Kayamandi – ten times the amount already connected – with the project serving as a template that can be copied anywhere in South Africa and around the world.
"At the core of our mission is the fight against digital apartheid. The gap between those that have fast, affordable internet, and those that don't. Those that have uncapped home fibre, and those that don't. The Kayamandi Fibre Project is our small way of trying to tackle digital apartheid."
