Twitter is labelled Elon Musk's 'cesspool' on Q+A as Malcolm Turnbull's former cybersecurity advisor says hackers deserve to face harsh penalties, but that Medibank had to consider paying up to protect exposed customers.

on the table but the other question raised was why cyber hacks were suddenly becoming more prevalent. Oh no, paying to Ukrainian far-right neo-nazis is a legitimate option, but paying allegedly Russian hackers not so much... because you could accidentally pay to US's NSA/CIA

ABC have found the Catherine Bennett of cybersecurity.

Paying ransoms should be illegal. I was surprised it already wasn't.

Thought we lived in a secure country. Apparently not. So where has all the money and time spent on cybersecurity gone.?

Plenty of people in the cyber security industry disagree with MacGibbon. He also supported the weakening of cyber security throughout the country through mass surveillance, specifically the metadata retention bill and assist and access bill. Beware the so-called “experts”.

No way a random should be paid . Australia just needs to block Russia from our internet access & all this will go away . When I blocked Russia from my business computers Scam attempts dropped dramatically

Demo rules: Always cheat.

Most definitely, paying a ransom is an option. If criminal gangs fail to keep their promises, they know they will never receive another ransom payment from anybody, anywhere, ever again. Simple logic. Some people should try thinking things thru before jumping to conclusions.

I thought he might be referring to a different type of hack. But no, he was directly talking about the Medibank hack which is of data that can't be verified as having been 'deleted' making it pointless to pay. CyberCX: the name you can't trust in cybersecurity.

How about they pay for actual cyber security

No. It's not an option & hackers won't be paid any ransom amounts. Also, as with Optus hack, there are still 'too many eyes' involved & some of those eyes are deadly. Thus, it would be best for hackers, who call themselves 'REvil', to apologize to Aust & delete that data sooner.

“Expert”

No it’s not a legitimate option … it opens the flood gates to cyber criminals knowing they can hold the entire world to ransom and take away every countries power or ability to defend themselves and it’s citizens reality cybersecurity
