Tennessee voted to ban slavery officially as a criminal punishment in the midterm elections.

Shehan Jeyarajah."Banning slavery as a punishment is a huge deal and the right thing to do."

Nearly 20 states have constitutions that include language language permitting slavery and involuntary servitude as criminal punishments. Colorado was the first to remove the language by ballot measure in 2018, followed by Nebraska and Utah in 2020. On Tuesday, voters in Alabama, Tennessee and Vermont approved measures removing those loopholes. The vote remained too close to call in Oregon on Wednesday morning, but voters in Louisiana rejected a ballot question that asked if they supported a constitutional amendment to prohibit the use of involuntary servitude in the criminal justice system.

"So a lot of people are making fun of the slavery ballots going around, but maybe don't know that slavery is still permitted via the 13th Amendment of the Constitution," tweeted Anthony Nash.

Umm, slavery was banned by Pres Lincoln. What was this law still doing on the books, they had to vote over it?

Who are the 200k+ people who voted to keep slavery legal? We live among some awful humans.

Way to go TN! Welcome to the 19th, ahem no, 20th, nope uhhhhh, 21st century! We knew you could do it!

So they're doing away with privatized prisons? Honestly, if you don't realize a for profit prison system is slavery, you're a dolt.

Focus on the 80% that said yes! That’s true news. Hell half the people in the Republican Party want to re-election a criminal, seditionist traitor who sold US secrets and violates the Espionage Act. That’s a story that isn’t being written.

That 22% though!

This headline is clickbait. Slavery was already illegal. This amendment makes a slight change to the verbiage. Of course people see it and just think 'Hell yeah I want to ban slavery!' This is a classic political tactic and is how a lot of garbage legislation gets passed.

i took a shit in my great great great great grandpappy's mouth and voted to finally end slavery.

What Is this a bad joke?

talk about being * late to the game * 😂

yes I voted in TN it was worded really weird, I was confused as it had something to do with prisoners working. Always going vote yes to banning slavery.

Good

Wait what? It wasn’t already banned? What we gonna ban next? Murdering children?

The UN General Assembly has adopted a resolution condemning Nazism, neo-Nazism, and all forms of racism: ✅ 105 in favor 🤔 15 abstaining ❌ 52 against including the U.S., Ukraine, U.K., and the entire E.U.
