Commonwealth Bank is diversifying its tech talent base, hiring another 400 engineers and software developers in Melbourne, in an effort to attract the best people from across the country to the bank.

CBA chief executive Matt Comyn toldthe shift to remote working as a consequence of COVID-19 had accelerated the bank’s plans to expand its workforce across the country, beyond its headquarters in Sydney.

CBA is one of the biggest employers of technology workers in the country, and in 2022 has committed toAhead of the bank’s full-year results on August 10, Mr Comyn would not comment on whether the pace of hiring in tech roles would be maintained, but he said investment in innovation and key digital capabilities was a long-term priority for the bank.

“We are also working with universities and other educational partners to increase the pool of home-grown talent in the coming year.”Until now, CBA has had about 100 tech workers employed in Melbourne. “Together, Monash University and CBA will adopt an industry-focused approach to address the technology talent challenges facing our country,” sad Professor Doron Ben-Meir, Monash’s deputy vice chancellor of enterprise and engagement.

“CBA is being seen by talented people across all disciplines of tech as an organisation where there’s a good balance between being empowered and innovative, but also safety in its scale, and it’s low-risk from a personal perspective,” he said.“We’re finding ourselves as the top option for a bunch of people who a little while ago would have gone to start-ups or the tech giants.
