When Hunter Murray drove 8,000km in his new electric car in a week, he did it to prove a point: The technology can work even for people living in the most remote parts of Australia

When Hunter Murray drove 8,000 kilometres in his new electric car in a week, he did it to prove a point: the technology can work even for people living in the most remote parts of Australia.Charging an electric vehicle to get 400 kilometres driving range can take more than five hours at a remote roadhouse

"People just realise that 90 per cent of the time they use their cars to go to and from work and it's not really a long-distance thing that they're looking for," he said.Hunter Murray says more people would drive electric vehicles in remote Australia if there was better charging infrastructure. Although Mr Murray has proven this technique can work to drive EVs across remote Australia, it's not for everyone.

According to Hunter Murray, it would cost about $150,000 to install the fastest possible charger, plus a little more for the work to be done in a remote location. The roadhouse, like most remote service stations, creates its own power using diesel generators, and Mr Murray said the ageing infrastructure would not be able to handle a fast charger.

Despite the potential savings on diesel offsetting the up-front cost reasonably quickly, Spud said investing that much money was a daunting prospect."There's another bonus too. You got the atmosphere. You haven't got diesel smoke going into the air."One solution to the infrastructure chicken-and-egg problem is for governments and big corporations to adopt EVs right across Australia.

Right now, the EVs will only be used as "town cars" and CLC policy will prohibit them from leaving the town limits of Alice Springs.

. How are everyone's coal-powered Teslas going? Anyone still kidding themself that they're using 'green energy'? EVs do not create green energy. Using green energy to recharge an EV merely diverts it from other uses. Aus is 75% coal. EVs do not create green energy. .

By building a nuclear power plant 👍 it's clean and green 🥰 Let's get this done Australia 👍

Inconvenient Truth : Replacing just 50 million of the world’s estimated 1.3 billion cars with electric vehicles would require more than doubling the world’s annual production of cobalt, neodymium, and lithium, and using more than half the world’s current annual copper output.

Just get a big spring and wind it up, that will do.

Have a long extension lead 🤣😂 A hybrid of some sort would be the way to go in remote rural areas. Then a person has a back up fuel source if the solar panels malfunction.

1000km. Charge = 4.5hr. Travel time 10hr. 14.5hr to travel = 68kmh avg. Very slow over 1000km. Also, lump of metal car is not needed in urban environment, we have electric quads, gophers, bikes, scooters. Concept of electric 2t car is flawed? Need hybrid thinking for optimum?

Spuds roadhouse would be a great green power demonstration site. Solar wind and hydrogen storage battery. His diesel generated power is probably triple the cost of grid power. Payback would be fast

. Every solar panel has the option of putting electricity into the grid. If you divert that solar energy to an EV, you deny its use elsewhere. Thus, recharging an EV using solar energy might make you feel clever, but the FACT is you made no difference to net carbon emmissions.

. How are everyone's coal-powered electric vehicles going? Anyone still kidding themself that they're using 'green energy'? Toyota is the world's biggest car manufacturer & it's not planning to build coal-powered EVs. Toyota has HYBRID tech which is better for the environment.

A very long extension cord?

Simple Put every single lnp nats candidate Last Someone brief speersy

Have they or are they looking at the possibilities of developing a duco that could work as a solar panel to charge the battery?
