Despite its demise, fans of the iPod have been growing in number as vintage players are dusted off, repaired, and upgraded with new parts.

Soon thereafter, reports circulated that new-in-box models of the last iPod bearing that original design—then called the "iPod Classic"—were selling on internet auction sites for. Clearly, some people were not ready to face up to a future that felt inevitable: a move away from vast collections of MP3 files stored on dedicated music players and toward a world of streaming music delivered over the air for a $10 monthly fee.

Reviving discarded gadgets is something the hardware hacking scene loves to do. By adopting the iPod platform, hackers turn e-waste into blank canvases for expression and symbols of rebellion against artist-unfriendly streaming services. Cara Esten, electronics enthusiast and musician, stumbled back into iPods after years of streaming music. “I ended up going to a garage sale, and somebody was selling a 30-gig iPod,” Esten says. “So I just picked it up.

eliteobsolete I thought I could, I tried, and remembered that about 60.11% of my music is DRM protected and this can't be used with iPods. Sucks

Want us to pay 0.99$ per track again too?

Yeah, no. Let’s not go back to 2001 thanks.

Habit?

If I disagree with the premise of this article will you hide my reply like you hid replies to that awful tweet about folks who've managed to avoid COVID?

look at the hardware in the media players compared to the internal hardware in the apple products. the hardware is way better.

But can you play Doom on an old iPod? 😂

Modded my own 6th gen for SD card as my car magnet holder kept corrupting the HDD. running Sony's flagship radio and using the iPod as a head unit is quite a nice combo 😎👌

has devices that are 2 terabytes capable. 160 gb meh!!

why bother the ipod? has device that put the ipod and it other versions to shame!! the FIIO M5 for example.

About time. Idk how an entire generation sat back n simply let tech giants dictate streaming instead of owning music to be the norm. Between record labels n streaming services fleecing both creators and consumers, the music industry has become downright synthetic n distasteful

I still love my iPod nanos cause I prefer to download my own music! ❤️🎵🎵🎶🎵🎶

but it's not affordable to modify to the vast majority. Try to opening can break flex cables and cases. Only for patient and expertise hands.

That’s what I felt when I watched a DVD in decades. No need to think about bandwidth, quality, navigating a cumbersome app, the account or subscription. So refreshing.

What’s nice about that?

My old (6th gen) iPod classic has developed issues. Reboots itself. Had the battery replaced about five years ago. Still use it every now and then.

No.Shit.

How could we not miss those cute little music machines, (or AM/FM radios free of bluetooth dependence)? Could it be that we've tired of carrying our phones 24/7, or is everyone sharing a nostalgia moment? Note: My 18 yr. old neighbor just bought a used boombox on eBay.

I still have my nano

Think my is salvageable hahahah

I got years of use out of my 80GB iPod Classic, but it really pales in comparison to PlexAmp and a 128GB Android phone.

Saw an iPod in the wild yesterday, right here in Dayton OH

he install raspberry pi w spotify in it inside his ipod classic

I still have mine too in mint condition 😊, use it when travelling

plss help me fix mine 😭

Been using the same ipod since 2007. Never needed repair.

It's not just iPods, but the iPod Hi-Fi speaker system that has lived to see another day. Even the new USB-C iPads can dock to its 30-pin connector for charging, audio, and remote control!

I have an iPod nano that only works if it’s plugged in. Any idea on how to get a new battery? Help!!!!!

I’d like to know where to get them repaired. Would love to get two up and running with some lossless action. Guess I’ll ask godoolge

I have and use a Nano in living room Sony desktop radio. Hit on the remote and ~1000 songs to go. The display of the one in kitchen is shot but WORKS fine.

Oh, reeeeeeeally? I bet I have at least three that I could 'dust off and repair!' Not sure if they're upgradeable or not, but I can always try!

iPod 3rd generation. Still going strong.
