The Google-backed AI firm taught a reinforcement learning algorithm to control the fiery plasma inside a tokamak nuclear fusion reactor.

, and has been working on a joint research project with the Swiss Plasma Center to develop an AI for controlling a nuclear fusion reaction.

But every time researchers want to change the configuration of the plasma and try out different shapes that may yield more power or a cleaner plasma, it necessitates a huge amount of engineering and design work. Conventional systems are computer-controlled and based on models and careful simulations, but they are, Fasoli says, “complex and not always necessarily optimized.”Nature

The neural network—a type of AI setup designed to mimic the architecture of the human brain—was initially trained in a simulation. It started by observing how changing the settings on each of the 19 coils affected the shape of the plasma inside the vessel. Then it was given different shapes to try to re-create in the plasma.

…cuz that sounds like a good idea?

This is how it starts

Scobleizer hebiflux bon.... Là ce n’est plus simplement de la génération de jpegs / wavs / txts ;)

Finally, something useful

Cool. I can barely get my neural network to put my shoes on the right feet in the morning.

i personally sneak corndogs into the buffet so others can enjoy them. I hide 6 corndogs in my jacket pockets. it then, is a joy for me to see others eating my corndogs

We're proud of this work by a team including former SFI Postdoctoral Fellow brendantracey! Here's a direct link to the research paper: fusion plasma DeepMind EPFL

reinforcement learning requires lots of failing.. how do you do that with a super-heated plasma reactor?

What can go wrong...

😲😲😲 man... I hope someone pentested that system

Do you want SkyNet? Because this is how you get SkyNet.

Interesting times.

Isn't this something better done with discrete algorithms?

Deepmind + Swiss plasma centers be like

So the end is near? 🤔

This is a true renewable not the faux stuff being peddled

did they reverse the polarity on those super sequencers that split the atom and give you the outcum of a polished turd?

Welcome my son Welcome to the machine...

No. No. No. No. No.

What could possibly go wrong.

Ai controlling nuclear fusion? Where have I heard that before?

Now that's a super cool application for neural networks

Have they achieved 1 over unity?

don't let the bloody thing watch The Terminator

If the plasma acts as predicted everything should be fine.

Calling a human woman “a learning algorithm” doesn’t change the fact that she’s smarter than you.

..do you realize? there wasn't even a split-second in between them reading it in my letters and telegrams, how i invented it all, and instantly deciding, filled with rage, then and there that they have to all mass steal it all. worldwide! iinventedfusion followthewhiterabbit

This is amazing ❤❤❤

Low-Code Platforms Don't Work Well with AI, But Here's How We Can Fix That | HackerNoonLow-code platforms might be booming, but are they ready to lift the power of AI as well? Read on to find out why low-code might not be a fit for AI. I disagree. To say that low-code automatically assumes high overhead and latency and hence unsuitable for AI? Not a valid assumption at all... That's like saying only assembly language is useful, because higher level languages like Java & Python add too much overhead.

Humans Find AI-Generated Faces More Trustworthy Than the Real ThingViewers struggle to distinguish images of sophisticated machine-generated faces from actual humans. AI needs competent legal geeks. To be fair, when composing a face one can choose more trustworthy faces.
